The Italian Pietro Beretta S.p.A. created the Beretta M1951, a 919mm semi-automatic pistol, in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The weapon, which was made exclusively for military use, was replaced by the Modelo 1934 pistol, which was chambered for the 917mm Short (.380 ACP) cartridge, and entered service with the Italian Armed Forces and other Italian security forces as the Modello 1951 (M1951).

The Beretta M1951 was the company’s first commercially available locked-breech design. It was produced in limited quantities starting in 1953 then on a large scale from 1956 until 1980 (previous Beretta semi-automatic handguns were exclusively blowback-operated).
The initial production run included an alloy frame that was lightweight but ultimately proved unable to endure the shock of the relatively powerful 9mm Parabellum bullet.
Around 1955, the steel-framed “second series” model of the Beretta M1951 supplanted this model. The “second series” Beretta M1951 was roughly 250 grams heavier than the alloy version, but the balance was improved (although in 1975 and 1976, a small number of alloy-framed Beretta M1951s were produced utilizing the new alloy designed for the soon-to-be-released Beretta 92 pistol).
The Egyptian Contract Model 951 is a unique variation of this “second series,” developed at the request of the Egyptian Arab Republic military, which pitted Beretta against Tokarev of Hungary to become its main source of sidearms.
